Many Germans have a Wordsworthian relationship with Nature and in particular to their forests and woods. Freiburg is at the southern edge of the Schwarzwald and there is a magnificent wood near to where we lived. On the edge of the wood there is the Waldhaus, used for displays and meetings concerning forestry, and a large forestry research department is just nearby. There is no shortage of water, and nor of well-maintained paths and BBQ areas ....... Freiburg itself is quite level (which explains the tens of thousands of cyclists. It is in fact one of the most cyclist-friendly cities in Baden-Wurttemburg.), but forested hills such as the Lorettoberg are just a few kilometres from the city centre. |
