I think Moira is having a bit of fun here, Mrs Lynde's performance being surreally rude and outrageous. Miss Stacy chooses to
react as little as possible - which is certainly wise, and her restrained mocking of Mrs Lynde is probably lost on the latter. Marilla is embarrassed by her friend's grotesque attitude, but holds her tongue, while Miss Stacy wins the bout by a huge number of points!
