The Observatory is a place of awe and beauty where much important astronomical work was done by a succession of great Astronomer Royals and other scientists. Visitors cannot but feel the weight of this great scientific history. It is closely associated, too, with British naval history and the problems of navigation and timekeeping in years gone by. The four most famous chronometers of watchmaker John Harrison are on permanent exhhibition in the Observatory Museum.

The setting of the Observatory in the magnificent Greenwich Park is a fitting site for this most famous of British institutions.
