Matthew rushes to the station in Charlottetown to fetch Anne back ....

Marilla thinks that Anne has stolen her brooch, then forces Anne to lie that she has just lost it down the well
(that imagination again!). As the brooch was a precious family heirloom, Marilla's prejudice against orphans
surges
up and she sends Anne packing. Later she finds the brooch slipped down behind a cushion and
Matthew hares off to Charlottetown to get Anne back, finally tracking her down at the station.

Typically, Marilla cannot yet quite
bring herself to show the human warmth
of touch which she has been denied for
most of her life. Though inwardly overjoyed she simply tells Anne she is glad she is
back and to go and sort out her things.

This is for me a touch of genius
on the part of the scriptwriters.
