Marilla and John Blythe
Marilla is confused about what to "do with Anne", who is asking questions about growing up ..... She has absolutely no experience of teenagers, and though Anne is not exactly a typical one, she wants the knowledge and clarity about certain things that all teenagers want. At dinner one evening, Anne asks about the importance and meaning of kissing, which throws Marilla completely, as she is still grieving over the passing of her lost love Gilbert's father John.
Marilla: "Sometimes I think she's possessed .........What are we going to do about it?"
Matthew: "I promised you I wouldn't put my oar in."
Marilla: "Well I could use another oar now; I'm rowing around in circles."
Matthew: "Well now, I don't see the harm in her being curious."
Marilla: "Matthew Cuthbert! Sometimes I don't understand you."
Matthew: "I seem to remember with you and John Blythe ..."
Marilla: "Yes."
Matthew: "... wasn't there a stolen kiss or two?"
Marilla:: "How would you know?" pause ..."Nobody stole anything ....... What do you suggest?"
Matthew: "Well, if we wanna do right by Anne, I reckon that means seeing that she has a fuller life ...... than us."
